Stephanie Rawlings-Blake was sworn in as Baltimore’s 49th mayor on February 4, 2010. In November 2011, she was elected to her first full term as mayor. Mayor Rawlings-Blake has focused her administration on growing Baltimore’s population by 10,000 families over the next decade by improving public safety and public education and by strengthening city neighborhoods.
Prior to becoming mayor, Rawlings-Blake served on the Baltimore City Council. First elected in 1995 at age 25, she was the youngest person ever elected to the post. In January 2007 she was elected council president.
Rawlings-Blake has served on numerous boards and commissions, including the Baltimore Convention and Tourism Board; Baltimore Museum of Art; National Aquarium in Baltimore; Baltimore Substance Abuse Systems, Inc.; Living Classrooms Foundation; Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore; and the Parks and People Foundation. She has also been honored with numerous awards, and was selected by The Daily Record as one of “Maryland’s Top 100 Women” in 2007 and 2011. The National Congress of Black Women named her a Shirley Chisholm Memorial Award Trailblazer.
Rawlings-Blake earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio in 1992. She received her Juris Doctor from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1995.
about:
The Creative Leadership in Civic Life Initiative
The GW School of Business is positioning itself to be an authority in civic leadership, not only to the advantage of the business sector but also to transform public institutions to think deeply about public/private partnerships. Creative Leadership in Civic Life's premise is simple: great leaders can and should leverage their business skills to foster and sustain strong communities.
Those leaders need not be elected, and, in many cases, they are better able to leverage their skills if they are not. Creative leaders in civic life are the individuals best positioned to make change in urban areas by assessing problems and devising cross-cutting solutions that engage individuals, groups and institutions. By designing and executing programs that open the door for business leaders and other community stakeholders to engage civil society, the Initiative creates opportunities to address public concerns and resolve intransigent problems, such as poverty, hunger, and joblessness.
During the 2012-2013 academic year, GWSB is engaging a series of programs that examine and put in to practice the tenets of creative leadership. These efforts are guided by the belief that through greater "embeddedness" in the community, business students are able to seek and find greater opportunities for growth and experience while also providing the energy and engagement to drive civic improvements.
